Diwali is the biggest holiday of the year in India. Nonetheless, the Indian equity and futures markets are open for “Muhurat” trading for a portion of the day.
Muhurat means “auspicious”. The session marks the first trades of the new Hindu year and symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. Muhurat sessions are typically an hour long—this year’s is on October 21 and starts at 1:45 pm IST.
The date of Diwali is determined by the Hindu religious calendar. The time of the Muhurat session varies each year and is chosen as auspicious by Indian astrologers.
